Women Crush Wednesday
Salutations, Henchmen!
WHITE RABBIT!
…do any of you say that? According to your Overlord’s Nana of Evil, saying “white rabbit” out loud upon waking up on the first day of the month will bring good luck all month long. A quick google search suggests that it was probably just made up by a bunch of kids in the 1900s? More interestingly, there’s a similar tradition called “a pinch and a punch”, wherein you’re supposed to pinch and punch someone upon waking to receive good luck. Hmm. A little bit of sadism and a complete ignorance of the rules of karma? Sounds like a superstition I can get behind! Anyway, I normally wouldn’t mention any of this because I’m not SUPERstitious, but I am a little stitious. (Lol, sorry, I simply cannot use that word without making that joke, apparently.) Seriously though, superstition is mostly bogus to me. HOWEVER, when I woke up this morning I saw a white rabbit hopping across the driveway. Coincidence? Probably. Or, perhaps….a sign that my life is about to become some sort of bad Groundhog Day -esque comedy film?! All Bill Murray did was doubt the legitimacy of a groundhog predicting the weather and he got stuck reliving the same day over and over and over! These plots never go well for the skeptics! I facetiously typed white rabbit in this newsletter instead of saying it out loud…What if I’m doomed to endure a month’s worth of increasingly bad luck and horrible happenings until I have no choice but to acknowledge the luck of the white rabbit tradition?! Even worse still, what if all of my misfortune ends up making me a more compassionate, wholesome, non-judgemental person in the long run?!?! *shudders* I’ll keep you posted.
So, assuming any number of unfortunate events might befall me that could hinder my ability to type and send this newsletter, it’s quite possible that this is the only Woman Crush you’ll receive this month. That’s alright though, because this one is absolutely enthralling. She is a creative genius with plenty of works for you to explore. Allow me to introduce your Woman Crush for this week, the awe-inspiring artist known as… Leah Fay!
If you’ve ever tuned into on of your Overlord’s livestreams then you’ve heard her perky voice lighting up my playlists. She is one half of the singing duo that makes up one of my all-time favourite Canadian bands, July Talk. The band is a national darling, racking up Juno awards and delighting audiences with their memorable, rousing performances. But, why tell you how great they are when you can just hear it for yourself?
When Leah isn’t lulling us all into loving her with her lilting voice, she’s exploring her artistry through other mediums. She’s taken a turn at acting, starring in the film Diamond Tongues (and earning a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Actress for her efforts). She also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in contemporary dance, putting it to use by co-founding a performance art collective (fuck yeah) and choreographing music videos (see below).
Simply put, Leah is a true artist. A dynamic performer who makes magic wherever she directs her creative energy. But while her many artistic talents are admirable, her willingness to use her platform for activism is equally as admirable. July Talk joined the Musicians Against Encampment Evictions petition last year and created the July Talk Votes campaign to encourage young Canadian voters to get out to the polls for the federal election.
To sum up, Leah Fay is talented, creative, dynamic, socially conscious, intriguing, attractive and, of course, Canadian. What’s not to love, eh? You can follow her and the band on Twitter & Instagram (@leah_fayy , @julytalk) to stay up to date on their latest projects and to infuse your timeline with flair.
Until next time, Henchmen! Stay evil.
